چکیده

The effects of early testosterone propionate (TP) treatment on the adult sexual behavior of hamsters were investigafed in two experiments. In Expt. I, mJe and female pup3 were injected with oil vehicle or 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, or 250 gg of TP 24 hr after birth. In EXPC. II, males and females received ejther oil or 10 pg of TP on the day of birth (Day l), Day 3, Day 5, Day 7, or Day 9. At 70 days of age all animals were gonadectomired and 10 days later tested for lord&s behavior aftw estrogen and progesterone priming. One week after the test for female behavior all females began receiving 500 fig of TP each day and were tested for mounting and intromission behavior three times at 10 day intervals. Lordosis behavior was inhibited by as little as 5 pg of TP given 24 hr after birth. In males this dose prodoced the maximal effect, but in females increasing dosages resulted in a proporlional decrease in lord&s duration. One pg of TP monatally facilitated later mounting and intromission behavior in females and 250 fig of TP was no more effective rhan 1 pg. Lordosis duration was inhibited in females by 1Org of TP on either Day 1 or 3, however, mounts and intromissions were facilitated by TP treatment on Day 1, 3, 5 or ‘7. These experiments demonstrate that the mechanisms mediating masculine behavior are mare sensitive to neonatal TP treatment than arc the mechanisms mediating Iordoris behavior.

Steinach and Young, Discoverers of the Effects of Estrogen on Male Sexual Behavior and the “Male Brain”1,2

In the 1930s, Eugen Steinach's group found that estradiol induces lordosis in castrated rats and reduces the threshold dose of testosterone that is necessary for the induction of ejaculation, and that estradiol-treated intact rats display lordosis as well as mounting and ejaculation. The bisexual, estrogen-sensitive male had been demonstrated. Another major, albeit contrasting, discovery was ma...

Effect of prenatal androgen receptor antagonist or aromatase inhibitor on sexual behavior, partner preference and neuronal Fos responses to estrous female odors in the rat accessory olfactory system.

Many socially relevant odors are detected in rodent species by the vomeronasal organ and subsequently processed by the accessory olfactory system (AOS). We previously found that gonadectomized male and female rats treated in adulthood with testosterone propionate (TP) showed equivalent Fos responses in the AOS to odors derived from estrous females. Likewise, in contrast with numerous other mamm...

Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) Effects on Puberty Timing, Reproductive Function and Behaviour in Adult Female Mice Following Neonatal Exposure

Background & Objective:  Fennel, as an edible plant, and due to its estrogenic compounds, has widely been used as a therapeutic agent for centuries. In this study, the effects of neonatal exposure to fennel alcoholic extract (FAE), on the onset of puberty, estrus cycle, ovaries, and lordosis were investigated.  Materials & Methods:  In this experimental study, 48 female BALB/c pups were divid...

The development of female sexual behavior requires prepubertal estradiol.

The classic view of brain and behavioral sexual differentiation holds that the neural mechanisms controlling sexual behavior in female rodents develop in the absence of ovarian sex hormone actions. However, in a previous study, female aromatase knock-out (ArKO) mice, which cannot convert testosterone to estradiol, showed deficient male-oriented partner preference and lordosis behaviors in respo...

Sex differences in infant rhesus macaque separation-rejection vocalizations and effects of prenatal androgens.

Infant and juvenile rhesus macaques exhibit many sexually dimorphic behaviors, including rough and tumble play, mounting, and time spent with nonmother females. This study investigated sex differences in infant rhesus monkey separation-rejection vocalizations (SRVs), and the effects of altering the prenatal hormone environment on these differences. Pregnant females received exogenous androgen (...
